Baseball Players on Steroids

Once again we’re hit smack in the face with the realization that common sense is as absent from the front pages of America’s newspapers as modesty is lacking in Paris Hilton.

Major league baseball, led by none other than former Senator George Mitchell (someone we used to respect) has indicated that yes more investigation is needed to get to the bottom of the baseball steroid issue.

Senator Mitchell begin by asking anyone who goes to any gym in the U.S. and they’ll tell you all those guys, the one’s with the huge biceps and bigs pecs are doing just what Barry Bonds did. And while we wish people didn’t use choose to use steroids, we think that they’re bigger issues to talk about. Lots of them, issues that don’t involve men paid millions of dollars to play a game.

Maybe I was mistaken. But years ago it seemed, or maybe I was just brainwashed by my Dad, but it did seem that issues got discussed, not necessarily solved, but discussed and debated.

So why not start at home. Instead of paying attention to news about nothing important, instead of distracting yourself with Barry Bonds, instead of filling your mind and conversations with issues that take you away, try something else.

Let’s stop the trend. Give up talking about American Idol, if only just a little and talk about what would make a difference in your neighborhood, your workplace, your kids schools. And then do something about it. Create a team. Write a letter. Hold someone in power to account.

In the words of Paddy Chayefsky’s fictional news anchorman Howard Beale, “I’m mad as hell and not gonna take it anymore.”

How about you?
